China's Li Tong Triumps as 2017 Global Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition Winner

Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico, 18th January 2018. After months of fierce competition against thousands of the best bartenders from around the globe, Li Tong of Lotus Lounge in Guangzhou, China, has been crowned the 2017 Global Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition winner, with her cocktail “Dancing Bees.”

In 2017, Patrón Tequila took the search for perfection far and wide, spanning five continents. The task? To create a simply perfect Patrón cocktail that reflects and harnesses the passion, precision and care that goes into each expertly crafted bottle of ultra-premium Patrón Tequila.

After winning the Chinese finals of the Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition in Hong Kong, Li travelled to Hacienda Patrón in Jalisco, Mexico where she competed in the semi-finals on 17th January 2018, against competitors from 15 other countries.

Li went on to secure a place as one of the top six in the Grand Final the following day, where she was joined by fellow finalist Greg Almeida of Scarfes Bar at Rosewood Hotel – London, UK.

She was also joined by finalists David Robinson of Hot Tamale in Darwin City, Australia; Tim Devriendt of The Cobbler in Ghent, Belgium; Jin Woo-Lee of The Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul, South Korea; and Omer Gazit of 223 Cocktail Bar in Tel Aviv, Israel. Li impressed across the board, where she was awarded as the 2017 Global Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition winner.

The six finalists recreated their winning cocktail in front of a panel of discerning judges; Lee Applbaum, Patrón’s Chief Marketing Officer; David Rodriguez, Patrón’s Director of Operation; Simon Difford, Editor of Difford’s Guide; and Stephanie Quiles, Editor of Buena Masa, in a pursuit to win this prestigious title.

Li was one of a number of phenomenal women competing in this year’s competition, including: New Zealand’s Madeleine Tate of Caretaker Bar and France’s Natalie Durrieu of La Queue du Coq, but it was her true passion and dedication to Perfection and how she related each aspect of her journey back to Patrón and her life, that really shone through.

About the competition, Li said “The competition has been amazing – I have met a lot of new friends and learnt a lot during the journey. The Patrón Perfectionists Cocktail Competition has been so exciting, I’ve been dreaming about seeing real agave and my dream has come true. I’m so excited to have won, and can’t wait to go back to China and tell my family. Perfection comes from the heart, it’s passion and it’s doing what we love, winning the competition has given me so much confidence to keep going and do something special as a bartender.”

Li’s winning cocktail, “Dancing Bees,” is a combination of Patrón Reposado tequila, yellow Chartreuse, chamomile yuzu shrub, Monin passionfruit syrup, and lime, topped with soda water.

Lee Applbaum, Chief Marketing Officer, Patrón Spirits International said: “The pursuit of perfection is core to the Patrón brand and is a concept that resonates with the world’s best bartenders.  This year, Patrón Perfectionists welcomed over 1,200 entrants from around the world, bringing a new, diverse range of talent to the competition’s third anniversary, making the selection of a winner incredibly difficult. Each competitor brought their own, personal interpretation of perfection, while demonstrating the unmatched versatility of Patrón Tequila. Li Tong demonstrates every dimension of the Patrón Perfectionists vision and is a worthy victor.  I’m excited to see how she shares that vision both at home in China and throughout the world as our Perfectionists champion.”
