Introducing Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años, The Oldest Tequila Patrón Has Ever Produced

Unexpected Aging Produces a Fortuitous Result, and a Once-in-a-Lifetime, Extremely Rare Extra Añejo Tequila

ATOTONILCO EL ALTO, Jalisco, Mexico (March 9, 2015) – Patrón Spirits has unveiled the extraordinarily rare Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años. The story of this unplanned tequila – Patrón’s first-ever limited edition – begins more than seven years ago when just over 30 French oak barrels of ultra-premium Patrón tequila were tucked away in the aging room at the Hacienda Patrón distillery in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico.

The barrels were initially intended to age for a year, but that year went by and then another, and as the aging room grew and the barrels were moved about, a full seven years had passed. And when the tequila from those barrels was tasted, the discovery was remarkable – over those seven years, the conditions in that particular area of the barrel room created the perfect microclimate to produce an exquisite extra-aged tequila.

“It’s truly exciting, and very unexpected, that we have this special opportunity to offer such an innovative and unique ultra-premium tequila,” said Ed Brown, President and CEO of Patrón Spirits International. “We were bestowed such good fortune with the way in which this tequila aged, and we’re proud and honored to share it.”

Typically, when tequilas are aged for such a long period of time, they can lose much of their natural agave character and take on too much wood flavor. But the low-to-ground position of these barrels, combined with the atmospheric temperatures over those years, created the ideal conditions for aging Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años – of which fewer than 700 cases are available.

“Even if we tried to replicate Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años, I don’t think we’d ever achieve the exact same result,” said Patrón’s Master Distiller Francisco Alcaraz, who personally certified the exclusive release of this tequila. “In my 40 years in the tequila industry, I’ve never seen a tequila aged this long taste this good. This is equivalent to a rare 50-year-old scotch.”

Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años was created using the same handcrafted process that gives the core Patrón line of tequilas its distinct smooth taste and high-quality. First, Patrón hand selects only the finest 100% Weber Blue Agave, which is then cut and quartered and placed in small capacity brick ovens for slow cooking. The cooked agave is then macerated, fermented, and distilled in copper pot stills using two uniquely separate processes, the centuries-old tahona method and the more modern roller mill process. Both methods produce distinctive tequilas that are then blended together to create core Patrón.

The French oak barrels which housed Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años imparted the tequila with a dark golden hue, and an intense woody aroma and flavor. Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años is characterized by its smooth and sweet taste, with distinct notes of dry fruits, citrus, and light caramel.

To commemorate the exclusivity of this extremely rare tequila, Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años is presented in an eye-catching replica of the very first hand blown glass Patrón bottle, made from the original mold. The bottle is finished with the original Patrón glass stopper, a further nod to the historic nature of this once-in-a-lifetime release. Patrón Extra Añejo 7 Años is available, while supplies last, at fine spirits purveyors nationwide for a suggested retail price of $299 (750ml; 80 proof).

“For a tequila this rare and this exceptional, we could have charged far more than $299,” added Brown. “But we want people to taste and experience this unbelievable find, and so we purposely priced it to be accessible for those who appreciate and enjoy sophisticated, top quality luxury spirits.”

From hand-harvesting the highest-quality 100 percent Weber Blue Agave, to the traditional, time-honored distillation process and individual labeling, numbering, and inspection of each bottle, Patrón tequila is crafted with meticulous precision and care. Though Patrón has grown to become one of the most-recognized and respected luxury spirits brands in the world, it is still exclusively produced in the Highlands of Jalisco, Mexico, in the same small batches and with the same commitment to quality and craftsmanship.
